How has the surveyor's work changed in recent years?

Technological evolution in the transport sector over the last 20 years has changed maritime operations, in particular insurance logistics. Today the market is driven by new needs, the demands are qualitively and typologically more varied and arriving from all over the globe. In the 1980's we saw the ever increasing need for network of quality surveyors who could respond quickly and effectively to a range of maritime logistics. Our company united both the knowhow and technology to enable us to do this.

Has technology changed the surveyor's work?
Yes, we have invested heavily in both hardware and software. At head office we maintain a database containing information on how to anticipate and avoid potential loss, inconvenience or damage.

In this sector the crucial factor is turn around time. Via our computer network we are able to retrieve repair quotes from any global location and during repair work provide accurate details on container arrivals and departures in and out of the repair terminal.

For damage inspections, we are now also using digital cameras & portable computers which, enable us to relay images & reports via modem to our client's accountant in Gioia Tauro. I think that developments in telecommunication & digital technogies will continue improve the accuracy of the surveyor's work, and reduce the overall time it takes to formalize an inspection, and subsequently the reduce our client's expenses too.

How does Medsurveys respond to current market needs?
Italy, contrary to the tendency in other economically developed and industrialized coutries, is characterized by a strongly fragmented market, meaning that both shipping and insurance companies need and organization like ours to quickly and efficiently respond to evolving maritime problems. Many purchasers and insurers lack the necessary resources to establish offices in major hub sites, but frequently require the presence of independent surveyors who can work in their interest, to ensure and certify the quality of goods, to survey on and off shore activities and to inspect vessels and cargoes. Medsurveys meets this demand with a fast, accurate and impartial service.

Could you describe your work at Gioia Tauro?
The port of Gioia Tauro started with 1.4 million TEU and has seen an annual increase of 15%. Our activities at Gioia Tauro comprise, amongst many, the monitoring of cargo operations, quantity and quality surveying, damage surveying, container & ship instrumentation inspecting & repair. The port is developing at great speed, and within 5 years economists speculate that Gioia Tauro will become the prefered hub for tranships in the Mediterranean. We're naturally looking forward to this prospect.
